Chapter Seven
Abstract
The normative and ethical foundations of journalistic professionalism are investigated in this chapter. It explores how ethics is taught, understood, and practiced in journalism education, emphasising its centrality to professional identity. The role of codes of conduct, regulatory frameworks and moral reasoning are also examined. The participant interviews suggest ethics is often embedded journalism learning and teaching content but not always explicitly defined. The challenges of teaching ethics in a rapidly changing media environment are also discussed and proposals for a practice-based, reflective approach to ethics education are outlined.
