Abstract

This chapter offers a practical and philosophical foundation for therapists entering the field of eating disorder treatment. Emphasizing the seriousness, complexity, and high mortality rates of these illnesses, the authors challenge the notion that significant advanced training is required, instead highlighting that many clinicians already possess the core skills needed for effective care. What's essential is a strong therapeutic alliance, curiosity, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team. The chapter addresses common barriers, such as fear, overreliance on measurable outcomes, and premature use of structured interventions, while stressing the importance of understanding the emotional, psychological, and social functions behind eating behaviors. A multidisciplinary model is promoted, urging therapists to move beyond isolated practice and engage with medical and nutrition professionals. The chapter underscores the necessity of sustainable self-care practices to support therapist well-being and longevity in this challenging yet rewarding work. Clinical vignettes illustrate the nuanced nature of recovery, including themes of shame, ambivalence, and gradual change.
