Introduction
Abstract
After listing the questions driving the focus of this book, the introduction positions the volume as an attempt to bring about conscientização among students, educators, and scholars with an academic interest in Latin America. It frames protest music that interacts with themes from the Christian faith and addresses the role that faith played in the process of sociopolitical liberation. It discusses the emergence of social protest music and liberation theologies and the cross-pollination that occurred between the two. A description of the general contents of the song analysis chapters precedes disclaimers about the limitations of the work. Each chapter is then briefly discussed so as to introduce readers to the protest song analyzed therein.
