Abstract

This chapter introduces the foundational relationship between pricing and profitability. It presents the profit function and explains how pricing decisions directly affect contribution margin and overall profit. The chapter emphasizes that effective pricing is one of the most powerful tools for improving profitability, often exceeding the impact of cost-cutting or increasing sales volume. Key distinctions between fixed and variable costs are explained, and graphical illustrations are used to show how pricing impacts contribution and profit. The chapter also introduces the Excel-based models that will be used throughout the book to support analysis. By laying out a clear, mathematical framework, this chapter prepares the reader for the more advanced topics in pricing that follow.
