Conclusions. Forest between potential and reality
Abstract
Conclusions summarise the observed characteristics of forests as environmental memorials, emphasising their potential for material and narrative change over time. Meanwhile, the Israeli forests-as-commemorations convey meanings deeply rooted in their specific cultural context. They consistently act as spaces for individual expressions of memory within the social and material dimensions of Jewish-Israeli memory culture, while also providing a soothing setting for its stable mental dimension. Following the October 7 attack and the war in Gaza, recent developments suggest an even further closure of forests for private, bottom-up memorial initiatives. This serves as a cautionary reminder of the limits typical for green commemorations carried out within a framework of authority.
