Abstract

Creating Memory is an arts-based initiative for Holocaust education. Through the creative arts and exploration of relatable themes, Creating Memory harnesses the creative process to connect future generations to Holocaust remembrance. The initiative’s activities allow various types of artistic expression to create its narratives: creative writing, visual expression, drama, and movement. The resulting artistic expression is the participant’s unique Holocaust remembrance, and not a narrative foisted on them. Creating Memory’s use of the creative process and its focus on emotional themes enable the participant to access the potentially traumatizing memory without repression. Creating Memory succeeds to transform the Holocaust narrative from a story of horrors and destruction and narrative of connection to the past and empowerment.
