The Healthcare Landscape
Abstract
The modern healthcare ecosystem in the United States is, by necessity, a highly complex construct. Gone are the days of a visiting physician carrying everything they might need in a single medical bag. Today’s system is designed to deliver a wide array of sophisticated clinical interventions requiring specialized skills, precise execution, and careful and continuous monitoring as and when needed across a variety of settings. In this chapter, we explore the key stakeholders in the US healthcare landscape and how they navigate complex coordination challenges to ensure effective care delivery. We also provide a framework that describes how healthcare resource utilization and the existence of competing treatments explain the behaviors observed in different therapy areas.
