Abstract

This chapter describes the author's transition from investigating cases of suspected arson to focusing on accidental fires. These cases proved more challenging and complex, requiring expertise in various disciplines such as electricity, appliances, and consumer products. The author encountered a wide range of fire causes, including bathroom exhaust fans, electric service panels, neon lights, and propane appliances. One notable case involved a propane explosion in South Georgia, resulting in a $40 million settlement. The author also worked on fires caused by swimming pool sanitizers, particularly 68% calcium hypochlorite, which is prone to spontaneous combustion when contaminated. The author's employment at Applied Technical Services provided access to advanced equipment and collaboration with skilled engineers. Subrogation cases became the author's specialty. A significant case involved a fire in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, caused by a loose connection in a neon sign.
