Abstract

Chapter 5 follows Frodo and Sam&s;s journey into Mordor after they have separated from the Fellowship. At the foot of the Emyn Muil, they capture Gollum, and he takes them into Sauron&s;s kingdom via a secret route known only to him. The imagery of Gollum&s;s secret way through the Dead Marshes is explored in terms of a damaged and degraded rectal claustrum, with many indicators of severe psychological disturbance suffered by Frodo&s;s infantile identity. Later, in Ithilien, Boromir&s;s brother, Faramir, captures the trio and is a reliable father figure who assists the pathway to psychological health through the Oedipus situation. This part of the novel climaxes at the threshold of Mordor in a confrontation with the negative mother, Shelob, Frodo&s;s apparent death, and Sam briefly becoming the Ring-bearer.
