Abstract

Chapter 7 tracks the climax and conclusion of the novel. Sam as the Ring-bearer is examined in terms of omnipotent failed reparation versus genuine reparation. The destruction of the Ring is interpreted as a surreptitious triumph of the omnipotent self, in the sense that Gollum, as the damaged infantile identity, is destroyed rather than redeemed. Frodo and Sam&s;s return to the Shire is understood as a continuation of the split central to the tale, with further integration needed and ultimately sought by Frodo. Frodo&s;s departure for the Elven Undying Lands, and Sam ultimately following him there, is suggestive of a final resolution of the saga&s;s intermittent healing process.
