Abstract

Changing meter refers to meter changes that occur between measures with the same beat-note value, such as 3/4 to 4/4 or 6/8 to 9/8. “ The Swallow ,” an African American folk song, is an example: A grand staff in treble clef with a three four time signature. The melody is notated with lyrics below, beginning with Little swallow, fly to your nest. The first system ends with the phrase, fly a fly away now. The second system repeats a similar melodic contour, ending with, fly a fly away. Rhythms are primarily quarter and eighth notes, and bar lines separate each short phrase. https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003605119/76f9448f-b51e-474f-8f8d-8f952c8e392f/content/24031-2005-PIV-012a-Example-001.tif "/>
