Abstract

Durational values are indicated using a system of symbols that show the relationships of notes to each other: each note value is equal to one half of the next larger value and twice the next smallest value. As note values get smaller, the system continues indefinitely, with each successively smaller note value adding one flag (or beam). In practice, one rarely sees note values shorter than the sixty-fourth note. The following symbols are the standard note durations: A chart displays pairs of note and rest symbols arranged vertically. From top to bottom appear breve, semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver, semiquaver, demisemiquaver, and hemidemisemiquaver. Each note is matched with its equivalent rest. The breve shows a hollow oval with a double vertical line; its rest is a long rectangular block positioned above a line. The semibreve shows a hollow oval without a stem; its rest hangs below a line. The minim shows a hollow oval with a stem; its rest sits above a line. The crotchet shows a filled note head with a stem; its rest resembles a curved stroke. The remaining notes are paired with matching rest symbols. https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003605119/76f9448f-b51e-474f-8f8d-8f952c8e392f/content/24031-2005-PI-001a-Example-001.tif "/>
