Abstract

For a research question to be scientific, it must be testable. To reach a point where such a question can be tested, the question needs to be translated into a language that permits data to be evaluated in such a way as to either support or reject it. This also requires that a research design be decided upon, which will ultimately affect the size and composition of your data sample. This chapter provides an overview of the predominant research designs utilized in Biological Anthropology and Archaeology and a discussion of how a basic hypothesis can be worded.
