Integrity As Guide
Abstract
Ethical approaches to documentary filmmaking are necessary at every step of the process. Ethics should guide project selection, how a filmmaker relates to participants, how a project is funded, how a story is told, how a filmmaker interacts with crew members, and how a filmmaker builds trust with participants and interviewees. This chapter provides an overview of ethical considerations and will ask readers to identify possible ethical concerns associated with their projects. Additionally, fact-checking and validating sources will be a topic in this chapter. A section on conversations will address both the basics of interviewing as well as the ethics of talking to vulnerable populations, children, and people with disabilities.
