Abstract

The themes and controversies in the early Freudian group remain central to much of today’s psychoanalytic discourses. These include: the balance of instinctual and relationship-oriented motivations; the comparative importance of the fantasies and actual relationships in the development of psychopathology and between the analyst and the patient; how gender and sexuality develop, and whether the Oedipus Complex is the key moment in development; and the place of historical and cultural factors in development and theory-building. The possibility that Freud overlooked the historical factors influencing his own theorizing is explored.
