Abstract

Diplomacy is an integral part of international relations. Historically, diplomacy evolved when two or more kingdoms and communities started interacting. Some rules of diplomacy are common around the world like the privileges and immunities granted to a diplomat. In Indian history, these rules existed apart from practices like hospitality towards a diplomat. These privileges were violated by the Portuguese during their initial years in India. The British tried to comprehend the rules and realized that the Indian sub-continent is rich in its own culture and cannot be outrightly subject to suppression. In later years, with the political power gained by the British, princely states were made vassal states, with the British exercising power through residency and their Foreign Office.
