Loss of symbolic order
Abstract
Experiences that fail to integrate into the symbolic order assume the characteristics of the real. They are perceived as external phenomena because they lack a corresponding symbolic representation within the patient’s inner world. For these patients, symbolic interpretations are not seen as means of uncovering unconscious psychic truths. Instead, they are perceived as manifestations of a new, concrete reality—often marked by grandiosity or persecution.
