Abstract

This chapter serves as a practical guide for film students making the leap from education to the industry, focusing on the essential skills of self-promotion, presentation, and persistence. It begins by stressing the importance of honest reflection, encouraging students to evaluate their work critically and identify both strengths and flaws so that each project becomes a catalyst for improvement. The chapter then explores how to find and build an audience through carefully designed posters, trailers, press kits, and publicity stills, showing how professional presentation adds credibility and marketability to student films. Moving beyond the films themselves, it provides advice on creating standout CVs and online portfolios, explaining how recruiters actually review CVs and what details make candidates memorable. It also outlines how to seek meaningful work experience, apply for industry schemes, and use online platforms to secure opportunities that can set a career in motion. Crucially, the chapter offers strategies for overcoming the fear of networking with industry professionals both in person and online. Finally, it addresses the resilient mindset needed to succeed in the film industry, reminding readers that careers are built not on luck, but on persistence and the courage to keep putting yourself out there.
