Abstract

Using images and quotations, I provide a sketch of the project Uncle Vanya: Scenes From Country Life in Four Acts, a site-specific, durational version of Chekhov’s play. I focus on the 2023 version performed for local people and visitors in the village of Krivina, Bulgaria, to make an argument for the centrality of Given Circumstances and the Magic If as tools of emplacement for a rich theatrical realisation.
