Abstract

This chapter is adapted from the superb multimedia presentation that conference delegates were treated to by Richard Gough at the Stanislavsky and Place conference in Perth, 2024. The presentation covered much of Richard’s work and thoughts from across his career, together with sometimes elliptical visual and aural cues and associations. The version below has been edited to retain some sense of this, to document and to provide a poetic, place-informed commentary on how Richard’s pioneering work with the Cardiff Laboratory Theatre was often rooted in Stanislavskian concepts and functioned to invoke and dramatise the typically very Welsh specifics of the place where the company performed, while layering these with a range of fantastic allusions and poetic motifs drawn from other places. Richard concludes with a fantasy, a Dark Room of possibilities, which might perhaps otherwise allow emplaced bodies to momentarily transcend space, place and time—the editors.
