Abstract

The 16-module progression of this text pauses mid-way for an interlude. This interlude introduces an assignment that will be threaded throughout the four subsequent modules. Readers are asked to listen to and watch a language sample video. Their task is to recreate the sounds of the sample as precisely as possible. What readers are actually doing is recreating “language” from another of Knight-Thompson Speechwork’s playful language series. This language, a subset of the previous language Omnish, is only some of the sounds of Omnish. It is called Somenish. This is not revealed to the reader in this interlude. Rather, the teaching philosophy of this interlude and the modules that follows is that this sample re-creation (and later transcription) is an opportunity for readers to rehearse the embodied, empathetic study of someone else’s sounds.
