Abstract

In Module Eleven , Experiencing the Vowel Symbols , readers are shown the phonetic symbols which populate the International Phonetic Alphabet Vowel Quadrilateral, having been explored in its “empty” version in Module Eight . The text leads readers through the Knight-Thompson Speechwork method of defining and practicing the recipe which the International Phonetic Association used to define each of the vowel symbols. Cardinal Vowel numbers are replaced by the symbols that represent those extreme positions. Readers also discover the vowel gestures which are in between the Cardinal Vowel positions and phonetic symbols which represent them. The module culminates in readers being asked to create a phonetic transcription of the vowel sounds in the secret language sample introduced in the Interlude.
