Abstract

Module Fourteen , Experiencing Linguistic Detail & Fluency, introduces the concepts of linguistic detail and articulatory fluency through a structured progression of exercises. Students experience and manipulate the vocal parameters of linguistic detail and fluency. These parameters are then explored through spectrum-based and mixing board-style activities in partnership, encouraging real-time adjustments to vocal choices in response to physicalized cues. Participants are prompted to reflect on how specific articulatory actions (e.g., consonant clusters, vowel differentiation, rhoticity, phoneme length) influence their performance and perception of text. The module culminates in actor-generated definitions of “linguistic detail” and “fluency,” inviting nuanced self-observation and iterative rehearsal strategies. By adjusting vocal parameters and adapting to specific circumstances, actors cultivate a more nuanced, responsive relationship with the text, thereby expanding both their expressive range and interpretive depth.
