The Archive as Evidence of State Crime
Abstract
This chapter examines Mosireen&s;s 858: An Archive of Resistance as a counter-forensic intervention that exposes state violence and contests authoritarian control over memory. In the absence of institutional justice and amid efforts at archival erasure, Mosireen creates alternative pathways to accountability through participatory media and radical curation. Drawing on theories of archival power, state crime and forensic aesthetics, the chapter analyses how 858 resists silencing by assembling fragments of visual testimony into a record that keeps struggle alive. The footage captures police brutality, torture, economic inequality and juridical violence, offering defiance rather than preservation. In 858, recording functions a mode of resistance, sustaining memory and affirming the political force of witnessing. As an open and decentralised archive, it continues to provide space for imagining justice and fostering collective engagement.
