Challenges and Opportunities in CCUS
Abstract
The rapid growth of the global economy and industrialization has resulted in a dramatic increase in carbon dioxide ( https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> CO 2 ) emissions, creating a formidable challenge to achieving global climate objectives. Analysis and projections demonstrate that achieving climate goals will require a multifaceted approach to managing ( https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> CO 2 ) emissions across all energy sources, including hydrocarbons. Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) emerges as a crucial technology in pursuing carbon neutrality globally, particularly in China and the GCC countries. China and the GCC are committed to low-carbon futures, energy security, and sustained economic growth. As such, they are well-positioned to establish a strategic partnership in CCUS technology, paving the way toward carbon neutrality in the current fossil fuel-reliant world. In the past several years, CCUS has gained strong momentum in both the GCC and China, with new commitments and projects emerging. This chapter provides an overview of the climate initiatives of China and the GCC, presenting the strategic role of CCUS in their decarbonization strategies. It provides a detailed overview of current CCUS projects, policy landscapes, and challenges of both the GCC and China. Moreover, the chapter explores the potential for collaboration between the two, identifying synergies and opportunities to accelerate CCUS deployment and drive global climate action.
