Abstract

This chapter identifies eight challenges that will shape the contours of American foreign policy in the years to come. These are: managing migration, responding to authoritarian governments, revitalizing transatlantic alliances, navigating a new world economic order, revitalizing international humanitarian organizations, defending democracy, rebuilding bipartisan foreign policy, and defining national values. The chapter also reiterates the need to address hotspots with comprehensive and coherent strategy, providing clarity on resources, objectives, and timelines. It should avoid haphazard plans or ad-hoc crisis management and should reject bold promises. Only then will the United States be able to navigate global hotspots without exhausting its resources or eroding its global influence. Getting foreign policy ‘right’ in global hot spots is not simply about avoiding immediate crises but about shaping the conditions for long-term stability and peace.
