Abstract

The United States faces tough questions about the future of its Iran policy. Should the U.S. prioritize engagement with Iran or focus its efforts on military deterrence? How should the U.S. counter threats from Iran’s allied proxies in the region? Should the United States continue to pursue sanctions to coax Iran to the negotiating table, even if such measures cripple the economy, hurt ordinary Iranians, or empower hardliners in the regime? Whatever the answers to these questions may be, the stakes are high, as containing Iran would help secure the global energy supply, address conflict and instability in the Middle East, and prevent nuclear escalation in the world’s most volatile region.
