Abstract

This chapter explores the online world known as the ‘Manosphere’, a network of websites, forums, and social media communities where extreme ideas about gender and masculinity are shared and reinforced. It examines the different strands within this world – from men's rights activism and pick-up artist communities to the more extreme incel subcultures – showing how these spaces normalise misogyny, entitlement, and aggression. The chapter highlights how young people can encounter these Manosphere ideas, often through social media algorithms or peer influence. It explains the language, memes, and belief systems common in these communities, helping educators recognise the signs of influence and understand the motivations behind them. The chapter also considers the consequences of these beliefs in the real world, including online harassment, sexist peer behaviour, and the reinforcement of narrow, harmful ideas of masculinity. By combining research, real-life examples, and actionable strategies, this chapter equips educators to navigate one of the most challenging digital landscapes affecting young people today.
