Abstract

This chapter addresses the serious and pervasive issue of male violence against women and girls (MVAWG), with a focus on how it manifests both in schools and the wider world. It explains the different forms this violence can take, from harassment and coercion to physical abuse, and highlights the underlying social and cultural attitudes that allow it to persist. The chapter examines how boys may be exposed to, or influenced by, attitudes that normalise aggression and entitlement. It also explores the links between misogyny, online radicalisation, and the wider culture of male dominance that young people encounter both on social media and in peer groups. Crucially, the chapter provides practical guidance for educators: how to recognise warning signs, intervene safely, and support both victims and those displaying harmful behaviours. It includes discussion prompts, policy guidance, and classroom strategies designed to foster empathy, respect, and accountability. By combining research, real-life examples, and actionable approaches, this chapter equips teachers to address MVAWG proactively and create safer, more respectful school environments for all students.
