Abstract

This chapter examines producers in scripted drama and unscripted reality television (TV). We compare both formats, which require strong creative leadership and sophisticated storytelling, even though they are produced through fundamentally different methods. The chapter also explores how showrunners serve as creative architects and operational managers, developing character arcs through collaborative writers’ rooms while ensuring narrative consistency across seasons. It discusses casting techniques and directing approaches that maintain tonal integrity. In analyzing reality TV, the chapter highlights how producers create replicable formats, cast compelling non-professional actors, and craft narratives through strategic editing. Students learn to address ethical challenges, including protecting participants’ welfare and responsibly representing their interests, as well as how to develop programming within a global landscape.
