Abstract

This chapter explores the strategic, legal, and operational dimensions of roads policing, highlighting its critical role in ensuring public safety and enforcing traffic law. It examines how road traffic enforcement contributes to reducing collisions, preventing harm, and supporting wider crime prevention through high-visibility patrols. The chapter outlines the structure of roads policing in the United Arab Emirates, referencing key legislation such as Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024 on Traffic Regulation. It also considers risk behaviours, licensing standards, and the use of technology including speed cameras, vehicle registration systems, and surveillance tools. Particular attention is given to serious collisions and the forensic investigation processes that follow, as well as the importance of community engagement and inter-agency collaboration. Challenges such as urban growth, multicultural road users, and changing vehicle technologies are also addressed. By linking law, policy, and practice, this chapter provides readers with a clear understanding of how roads policing contributes to national security, public confidence, and the overall policing mission.
