Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to the main themes of the book and describes the sites and methods of research. First, the chapter contextualises and outlines the three interconnected, central questions of the book: (1) are genuinely close, caring and emotional ties possible between employers and workers? (2) Do workers have any agency in the domestic space of their employment? (3) How are domestic workers’ identities constructed through the intersections of social class, religion, ethnicity, caste and age in their own community? The chapter describes how the ethnographic methods were used to conduct this long-term study over the course of seven years in total.
