Vocational Opportunities for Transgender Persons
Abstract
This chapter critically examines how transgender individuals are integrated into employment and vocational opportunities through an analysis of lived experiences and structural systems. It highlights systemic barriers and policy frameworks aimed at improving access. It furthers investigates how transgender persons continue to face exclusion from major national labor surveys, and major financial institutions in the country fail to collect disaggregated data, leading to an incomplete picture of their economic participation. Factors such as low workforce engagement, high dropout rates, and widespread discrimination and abuse at workplaces further compound their vulnerabilities. The chapter also reviews skill development initiatives, funding and loan provisions for entrepreneurial ventures, pointing out systemic gaps that prevent fair access. It concludes with reflections on affirmative action, job security frameworks, and workplace protections like the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace (POSH) Act, emphasizing the urgent need for inclusive, data-informed, and sustainable vocational pathways for transgender persons.
