Conclusion
Abstract
Beyond the Classroom Closet makes visible what has too often been obscured: that schools are never neutral ground. They are not simply places where students acquire knowledge or prepare for examinations. Rather, they are cultural stages where identities are disciplined, national ideals are rehearsed, and hierarchies of belonging are repeatedly drawn and redrawn. For LGBTQ+ educators and students, this reality is not theoretical but lived. Each day requires calculations about disclosure and concealment, about how silence might shield yet also wound, and about how institutions simultaneously surveil and marginalize. The essays gathered here illuminate those negotiations while also exposing the broader structures that sustain them.
