Abstract

Architectural predispositions towards sustainability revolve around materials, products, and the harnessing of natural resources. More recently, ideas of sustainability have extended into an appreciation for the production of these entities, where they come from, their carbon footprints, embodied and operating energy consumption, and deeper considerations around future-proof management and constituent lifecycle assessments. In addition to these aspects, however, sustainable architecture requires deeper insight and acknowledgement into the social, personal, and economic elements of sustainability and practice. This chapter will therefore highlight several of these important concepts and determinations – including economics, timeframes and governance, privacy and user anonymity along with emotional labour and stewardship.
