Abstract

This chapter focuses on the spirituality and continuity of the Black dance practised forms in the UK, through the works of two creatives, H. Patten, a UK-born dancer of Jamaican/African heritage and Peter Badejo, a Nigerian dancer and choreographer. These two individuals and their professional companies, in many ways, shaped the development of dance in the UK, Patten combining Caribbean and African dance practice to create new and exciting dance vocabularies and Badejo, bringing to UK presentations, inspirational and uplifting music and dance content from his rich Yoruba traditions. Over the many years of research and productions, their work was inspired by their spirituality and their cultural belief systems and those intangible cultural heritage trademarks percolate through all levels of their practice.
