In Their Own Words
Abstract
Often marginalised in many societies, it was the powerful groups of women, the female dancers and choreographers who were the backbone of the Black Dance Movement in the last half of 20th-century Britain. This chapter is a collection of ‘their life-stories’ written by seven women but it is dedicated to all the women who influenced and contributed to the Movement. It pools together and shares the memories of some of the key women contributors from the 20th century; women who have played major roles in the Movement and who continue contributing to the arts in the UK to the present day! As the title to the chapter indicates, it&s;s ‘In their Own Words’.
