Abstract

Article III of the Constitution gets right to the point in providing for the judicial player: “The judicial Power of the United States shall be vested in one Supreme Court, and in such inferior courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish.” The Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States in 2024, which granted presidents near full legal immunity for their actions in office, was a reminder of the central importance of the judicial branch. The public attention and partisan division of this ruling echo in other major political conflicts including affirmative action, voting rights, and abortion—national disagreements that the Court is called on to resolve.
