Abstract

Civil rights and liberties protect the political players and the American people. They limit government conduct by requiring officials to follow due process of law; and describe some of the goals of the republic, such as allowing the greatest possible freedom of speech. They guard citizens against discrimination because of their gender, age, sexual preference, and race—protections that Americans didn’t have a century ago.
