Abstract

Through an analysis of three Scottish newspapers, this chapter looks at how the professionalisation of women's football is reported. It does this through looking at reporting around Scotland's first ever match at a World Cup finals where they faced the ‘Auld Enemy’ England. A consistent narrative across all newspapers was a celebration of the massive strides forward made by women's football in Scotland and predictions of a brighter future for the game. The work also highlights some of the different ways that women's football is portrayed within the national media and considers some of the challenges facing the sport beyond the hegemonic core of the international game.
