English newspaper (re)presentations of Wales in the 2022 FIFA Football World Cup
Abstract
Through an examination of selected English newspaper narratives, this chapter provides a snapshot of how the Wales team and Welshness was framed through the prism of the Wales versus England men's football match in the group stages of the FIFA 2022 World Cup. Although the English newspapers' second-ordered constructions framed Wales as the ‘other’, this was juxtaposed with a respect for the Welsh players' achievement in qualifying for the World Cup and an admiration of Welsh supporters' progressive celebration of Welshness.
