The blazerati in Scottish and British tennis
Abstract
Few athletes have been discussed more in relation to national identities in Great Britain than the tennis player Andy Murray. Born in Scotland, Murray triumphed at Wimbledon in 2013 to end the 77-year wait for a British man to win the men's singles championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. This chapter offers some observations on media narratives of the Murray Legacy drawing upon an analysis of newspaper articles from two key events. Through focusing on the governance of tennis, it considers how the story of sport is shaped and reshaped through various (re)presentations of celebrity and nation.
