Abstract

Collaboration has emerged as a foundational 21st-century competency essential for success in both education and the evolving workforce. Yet measuring and supporting collaborative skills at scale remains a challenge. This chapter examines how intelligent AI systems can be designed, implemented, and validated to assess and support collaboration learning while addressing longstanding barriers to widespread adoption. Drawing on established collaboration frameworks and evidence-centered design principles, this chapter identifies the conceptual foundations for measuring collaboration and then explores challenges with implementing assessment of collaborations. This chapter then identifies key opportunities afforded by AI to overcome these challenges. Finally, through examples of real-world implementations, this chapter demonstrates how principled design grounded in collaboration theory, combined with advancing AI capabilities, can create scalable systems to prepare learners for an interconnected world while respecting the dignity, diversity, and needs of all students.
