Abstract

This study applies Pearce’s orchestra model of tourism experience to identify what matters to visitors when frequenting an animal-based eco-certified attraction. The orchestra model identified that, although seeing wildlife was the dominant reason for visiting the chosen attraction, different supporting elements of the experience (e.g., scenery or spending time with others) were pertinent, depending on the attraction selected. As many visitors did not know that their chosen visitor attraction was eco-certified, and their conservation knowledge was an insignificant predictor of satisfaction, more education measures on the sustainable environmental initiatives used by visitor attractions, which could be mirrored by visitors when at home, could be utilised to help visitors protect animals and conserve the natural environment.
