Places of Remembrance or Remembrance of Places?
Abstract
This chapter analyses the multiplicity of places that are considered Sufi lodges (tekkes, dergahs) in contemporary Turkey. It departs from a general distinction between pre-republican buildings that have been restored as museums and cultural centres and lodges that have been more recently founded by active Sufi communities. The latter are mostly found in “new” kinds of places such as apartment buildings and have been much less explored in the literature on Turkish Sufi lodges. However, the analysis transcends the apparent dichotomy of old and new lodges by observing the entanglements of memory and forgetfulness, denunciation and apology at all these places.
