Social Sciences and Humanities
Abstract
Social science and humanities courses in dual enrollment and early college programs have the potential to expand students’ vision of themselves and what they are capable of. Subjects such as psychology help students understand themselves and their peer groups, helping counteract the stigma around mental health that still exists in many families and communities. Social sciences such as political science can help students sharpen their research, writing and presentation skills and give them insights into their local and national communities. Programs can also build important foundational skills that will help them in college and career, including critical reading skills, as well as non-cognitive skills that improve student success.
