Coda: Beyond the Mid-Century
Abstract
The New Yorker ’s Irish connections extended beyond the mid-twentieth century. The contributions of Edna O’Brien and William Trevor lasted into the 2000s. Seamus Heaney’s poems appeared regularly in the magazine from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Colm Tóibín, Anne Enright, Kevin Barry, Roddy Doyle, Colum McCann, and Claire Keegan are among the new generation of Irish writers who have written for the magazine; more recently, The New Yorker published excerpts from Sally Rooney’s Beautiful World, Where Are You? (2021) and Intermezzo (2024) before the novels hit the bookstores. The coda considers the implications of Irish writers’ continuous relationships with The New Yorker , pondering the global dimensions of Irish literature in relation to America’s magazine culture beyond the mid-twentieth century.
