Abstract

This chapter reflects a critical discussion of the role of developmental theory in Early Childhood Education, and traditional notions of the daily work of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs). It delves into the limitations of traditional structures that often dominate ECE training, which can restrict educators’ ability to engage in dynamic, thoughtful practice. The author argues for a shift toward a more inclusive approach that encourages ECEs to actively theorize and reflect from the start of their careers. By referencing contemporary developmental science and reconceptualist projects, the text highlights the need for educational materials and programs to evolve and truly reflect the capacities of early childhood education students. Emphasizing pedagogical mentorship, this chapter advocates for fostering confidence, curiosity, and innovation among early career educators. Ultimately, the text calls for reimagining how ECEs are taught and supported, advocating for a richer understanding of both children and educators within the field.
