Abstract

The supernatural is an umbrella term for an enormous range of beliefs and activities that were common in the second half of the nineteenth century. Serious academics who investigated unexplained phenomena using scientific language and empirical experiments contrasted with charlatans and frauds who preyed on the most credulous members of the community, with those who genuinely believed in supernatural powers or manifestations. This chapter examines the points of intersection between witchcraft and all aspects of the supernatural.
