Abstract

Schema Therapy is built on the concept of early maladaptive schemas . While schemas are predictions, modes describe the organism’s reaction when this prediction is activated, whether this response be physiological, affective, motor, kinesthetic, cognitive, verbal, and so forth. Since schemas operate implicitly, therapy often starts by working with the responses we can see and feel. You might be surprised to discover, through simple exercises, that you already intuitively understand modes. Jeffrey Young identified ten key modes , which this chapter explores in depth. Among them, the Vulnerable Child and Angry Child modes reveal deep emotional wounds and unmet needs. To cope with this suffering, we develop protective strategies like Compliant-Surrender, Protector-Avoidance, and Overcompensator —strategies formed in childhood that still feel like the only option available. This book reveals how the Therapeutic Reconsolidation Process can rewrite these emotional reactions and strategies, making space for the Happy Child and Healthy Adult modes—unlocking a more fulfilling, empowered way to live.
